Vitamin E and my skin- They are friends

 What is Vitamin E?

Vitamin E is one of the fat soluble vitamin, an essential nutrient with anti-inflammatory properties. Vitamin E plays important role in the immune system, cell function, and skin health.

Vitamin E is an anti oxidant which makes it effective at combating the consequences of free radicals produced by the metabolism of food and toxins within the environment.

Naturally occurring vitamin E is typically labeled as “natural” or “d” vitamin E, while synthetic vitamin E may be a mixture of eight isomeric form.Tocopherols and tocotrienols also are available as ester derivatives that increase molecular stability upon exposure to heat, light, and air.

Vitamin E is the most abundant lipophilic antioxidant found in human skin .Levels of vitamin E in the epidermis is higher than the dermis in humans.

It may also be effective at reducing the symptoms of atopic dermatitis and fatty liver disease, and for slowing the progression of mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease.

Vitamin E is even used to widen blood vessels, reducing the risk of blood clots.

WHAT FOOD CONTAINS VITAMIN E?

Vitamin E levels in skin can be reduced due to skin exposure or UV rays. Vitamin E levels also decrease with age. However, vitamin E is available in many foods, in supplement form, and as an ingredient in products applied topically.

  • certain processed foods, such as cereal, juice, and margarine
  • abalone, salmon, and other seafood
  • broccoli, spinach, and other green vegetables
  • nuts and seeds, such as sunflower seeds, and hazelnuts
  • vegetable oils, including sunflower, wheat germ, and safflower oil

FUNCTIONS OF VITAMIN -E IN HEALTHY SKIN

Vitamin E is important for maintaining our skin healthy. First it is important to know how vitamin E plays role in maintaining health of skin?

Vitamin E first accumulates in the sebaceous gland before it is delivered to the skin surface through sebum .

After oral ingestion it takes at least seven days before the vitamin E content of sebum is altered and there are no specific transport proteins specific for vitamin E in the skin.

Sebum then gets secreted to the surface of the stratum corneum, where it concentrates in the lipid-rich extracellular matrix of this layer .

Vitamin E can also penetrate into all underlying layers of skin due to it's lipophilic nature. Skin vitamin E levels are higher in individuals with increased sebum production, also as in skin types that naturally produce more sebum.

Vitamin E products can be bought online from online pharmacy store in India.

ROLE OF VITAMIN E IN HEALTHY SKIN

1. Photoprotection

Vitamin E may be beneficial at reducing UV damage to skin , thus, primary role of vitamin E in the skin is to prevent damage induced by free radicals and reactive oxygen species.

The use of vitamin E within the prevention of UV-induced damage has been extensively studied. Although molecules within the vitamin E family can absorb light within the UVB spectrum, the “sunscreen” activity of vitamin E is taken into account limited since it cannot absorb UVA light or light in higher wavelengths of the UVB spectrum. Topical application of vitamin E is usually effective for increasing photoprotection of the skin.

2.Anti-inflammatory role

Vitamin E considered to be anti-inflammatory agent as vitamin E can reduce UV-induced skin swelling, skin thickness, erythema, and edema — (signs of skin inflammation)

3.Nourishes the Skin

Vitamin E makes the nerves stronger by nourishing our skin from within. Vitamin capsule is often used by people to apply on face instead of swallowing. They burst open the capsule and apply the dense liquid on their skin and it gives positive resultsresults.

4.Vitamin E Treats Stretch Marks

Vitamin E oil onto the skin increase levels of the nutrient in the skin tissue. By applying it regularly and rubbing gently on the area of stretch marks it treats it.

5.Wound healing

Vitamin E levels decrease rapidly at the location of a cutaneous wound, along side other skin antioxidants, like vitamin C

6.Anti ageing

It is applied around wrinkles along with normal cream for few weeks for best results

7.Cures Muscle cramps

It relaxes the muscles this can be used to cure muscle cramps.

8.Treat sunburns , chapped lips and dark circles

Vitamin E being an antioxidant neutralizes the effects of free radicals caused by ultraviolet radiation thus helps to treat sunburns and dark circles.

9.Acts as moisturizer and cleansing agent.

Vitamin E is a heavy emollient and helps to get rid of dirt or other impurities along with maintaining skin's oil balance.

HARMFUL EFFECTS OF VITAMIN E :

Excess or less than normal both are harmful for a person.

1.) Deficiency of Vitamin E

People who have digestive disorders when fat is not absorbed properly can develop a vitamin E deficiency. Such conditions can be pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis, celiac disease . The following are the common signs of a deficiency:

  • Retinopathy
  • Peripheral neuropathy (damage to the peripheral nerves)
  • Ataxia
  • Decreased immune function

2.) Toxicity

Excess of everything is bad even and leads to toxicity but is not yet seen in Vitamin E.However, there is a risk of excess bleeding.

VITAMIN E CONSUMPTION:

A.) Vitamin E Suppliments

When taken orally, through food or supplements, vitamin E is delivered to the skin by sebum, the oily secretions produced by sebaceous glands.People with oily skin have higher concentrations of vitamin E in their dermis and epidermis.

B.) Topical Vitamin E

Vitamin E easily absorbs into skin and is topically used via creams or other products may increase the amount of vitamin E stored within the sebaceous glands as an oil for topical use. For the same reason it is added to many cosmetic products, including anti-aging creams, eye serums, sunscreens, and makeup.

The products can be bought online from healthcare products delhi.

CONCLUSION:

Vitamin E is an integral part of the skin’s antioxidant defenses which provides protection against UV radiation and other free radicals that may come in contact with the epidermis Even though certain medical interactions may take place if a person is already on some medication such as warfrin, so in such cases one must consult doctor.  Co-supplementation of vitamin E and vitamin C proves to effectively increase the photoprotection of skin through the diet.
